Varicose veins and spider veins affect a significant portion of adults across the country. According to the Society for Vascular Surgery, approximately 24% of adults in the United States have visible varicose veins, and 6% develop chronic venous disease that can lead to leg swelling, skin discoloration, and venous ulcers if left untreated.
Applied to Sunnyslope’s population of approximately 44,731, that means roughly 10,735 residents may have visible varicose veins and approximately 2,684 could be living with chronic venous disease.
Sunnyslope is a diverse community in north-central Phoenix. Several factors increase the likelihood of developing vein disease, including prolonged standing or sitting, family history, pregnancy, and age. Arizona’s extreme heat also plays a role – high temperatures cause veins to expand, which can worsen symptoms like heaviness, swelling, and visible bulging. Many residents notice their symptoms intensify during the warmer months.
After treatment, Sunnyslope residents return to the active desert lifestyle they love:
Hiking the Summit Trail or Freedom Trail at Piestewa Peak just east of the neighborhood
Morning walks through the trails at North Mountain Park and Preserve
Grabbing coffee at Lifeboat Coffee or Grinders Coffee Co. on Dunlap Avenue
Browsing the weekly Sunnyslope Farmers Market for fresh, local produce
Exploring the murals and local shops along Hatcher Road and Cave Creek Road

Moderate hiking supports vein health by engaging the calf muscle pump. However, strenuous summit hikes in extreme heat can increase leg swelling. If you experience aching, heaviness, or visible bulging after hiking, schedule a vein evaluation to rule out underlying venous insufficiency.
Our Phoenix clinic at 1641 East Osborne Rd. Suite #4, Phoenix, AZ is approximately 10 minutes from Sunnyslope via 7th Street south or Central Avenue south. Call to schedule your free evaluation.
Compression stockings are effective year-round, though they can feel warm in summer. Lightweight, moisture-wicking medical-grade options are available. Many Sunnyslope patients wear them during morning activities and remove them during the hottest afternoon hours per their doctor’s guidance.
Treated veins do not reopen. However, new varicose veins can develop over time in patients with genetic predisposition or ongoing risk factors like prolonged standing. Regular follow-ups and healthy habits reduce this risk significantly.
The first step is a free vein evaluation at our clinic. We examine your legs, review your symptoms, and discuss treatment options. If needed, a diagnostic ultrasound is ordered and typically covered by insurance. Call to book your appointment.
