Varicose veins and spider veins affect a significant portion of adults across the country. According to the Society for Vascular Surgery, approximately 24% of adults in the United States have visible varicose veins, and 6% develop chronic venous disease that can lead to leg swelling, skin discoloration, and venous ulcers if left untreated.
Even in a smaller community like Carefree – population approximately 3,690 – those numbers are significant. Roughly 886 residents may have visible varicose veins and approximately 221 could be dealing with chronic venous disease.
Carefree is a small desert town north of Scottsdale, where many residents are 55 and older. Age is one of the most significant risk factors for vein disease because vein valves weaken over time. Prolonged standing, reduced mobility, and years of wear on the circulatory system all contribute to varicose vein development. For active retirees who want to stay on the golf course, the walking trail, or the pickleball court, early evaluation and treatment can make a meaningful difference.
After treatment, Carefree residents return to the serene desert lifestyle they cherish:

Yes. Our minimally invasive procedures use only local anesthesia and are well-tolerated by patients in their 70s, 80s, and beyond. There is no general anesthesia and no hospital stay. Our specialists have extensive experience treating older patients.
Dry air contributes to dehydration, which thickens blood and makes it harder for veins to circulate it efficiently. Staying well-hydrated is especially important for vein health in Arizona. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day supports healthy circulation.
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) occurs when leg vein valves stop functioning properly, allowing blood to pool in the lower legs. Symptoms include persistent swelling, heaviness, skin discoloration, and in advanced cases, venous ulcers. CVI is the underlying cause of most varicose veins and can be diagnosed during a free ultrasound evaluation.
Compression stockings are typically worn during waking hours. Your specialist will recommend specific guidelines based on your condition. For mild symptoms, wearing them during extended standing or walking may be sufficient. For more advanced disease, daily wear is recommended.
