Varicose Veins: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Varicose veins may be more than a cosmetic concern. If enlarged or twisted veins appear with aching, heaviness, swelling, cramping, itching, or skin changes, an evaluation can help determine whether venous reflux may be involved.

Understand the Condition

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged superficial veins that often appear twisted, swollen, or raised above the skin. They most commonly develop in the legs because leg veins must move blood upward against gravity.

1

Healthy one-way valves open

They allow blood to move upward toward the heart.

2

Valves close between heartbeats

This helps reduce backward blood flow inside the veins.

3

Weak or damaged valves may leak

Blood can collect, increasing pressure on the vein walls.

4

The vein may stretch and enlarge

The result can be a visible bulging vein and related leg symptoms.

How Veins Change

How Varicose Veins Develop

The process can begin below the surface before a vein becomes visibly enlarged.

1

Blood Moves Upward

Calf muscles and one-way valves help blood move toward the heart.

2

Valves Weaken

Valves may not close fully because of genetics, age, pressure, or prior injury.

3

Blood Flows Backward

Reflux allows blood to collect inside superficial veins.

4

Pressure Builds

Increased pressure can stretch the vein walls and make veins swell.

5

Veins Become Visible

The vein may appear enlarged, twisted, or bulging and may cause symptoms.

What Your Legs May Feel

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Some varicose veins cause no discomfort. Others may appear with physical symptoms that become more noticeable after standing, sitting, or normal daily activity.

◑

Aching or Throbbing

Discomfort that may become more noticeable after long periods of standing.

⧗

Heaviness or Fatigue

A tired, pressured, or heavy feeling that can affect normal leg activity.

↑

Burning or Itching

Irritation, warmth, or a burning sensation around visible veins.

◌

Nighttime Cramping

Cramping or muscle tightness that may interrupt sleep or rest.

∿

Pressure or Tenderness

Soreness, pressure, or sensitivity around enlarged or visible veins.

◉

Later-Day Swelling

Swelling around the lower legs or ankles that may worsen later in the day.

Symptoms can have several causes. A consultation and same-day ultrasound can help clarify whether venous reflux may be contributing.

Why They Develop

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins develop when pressure builds inside superficial leg veins and the vein walls or one-way valves do not function normally. Several factors can increase the likelihood of developing them.

⟳

Family History

A family history of varicose veins can increase risk.

✚

Age

Vein walls and valves may weaken over time.

☁

Pregnancy

Blood volume and pressure on pelvic veins may change.

♡

Standing or Sitting

Long periods in one position can make blood return harder.

℞

Limited Movement

Calf muscle movement helps push blood upward.

⧗

Added Vein Pressure

Excess weight or prior vein injury may add pressure.

Visible Vein Types

Varicose Veins vs. Spider Veins and Reticular Veins

These veins can appear together, but they differ in size, depth, appearance, and the symptoms they may cause.

Smallest

Spider Veins

Thin red, blue, or purple web-like vessels close to the skin. They are often cosmetic, though nearby symptoms may have another cause.

  • Flat and fine
  • Web-like pattern
  • Often less than 1 mm

Medium

Reticular Veins

Blue or green veins beneath the skin. They may feed nearby spider veins and are larger than spider veins but smaller than varicose veins.

  • Usually not raised
  • Blue or green
  • May form a branching network

Larger

Varicose Veins

Enlarged, twisted, or bulging superficial veins. They may appear with aching, heaviness, swelling, itching, cramping, or skin changes.

  • Raised or rope-like
  • Often blue or purple
  • May be linked with venous reflux

Know When to Act

When Should Varicose Veins Be Evaluated?

Stable visible veins may begin as an appearance concern. A vein specialist should evaluate them when they appear with ongoing aching, heaviness, swelling, skin changes, bleeding, or a sore that does not heal.

Sudden one-sided swelling, pain, warmth, redness, or discoloration needs prompt medical attention because it may indicate a problem beyond routine varicose veins.

01

Persistent Aching or Heavy Legs

Symptoms that continue, worsen after standing, or affect normal activity deserve evaluation.

02

Repeated Leg or Ankle Swelling

Swelling that returns or becomes more noticeable later in the day may need assessment.

03

Skin Color or Texture Changes

Discoloration, irritation, dryness, or hardening near the ankle should not be ignored.

04

A Slow-Healing Sore or Vein Bleeding

A sore near the ankle or unexpected bleeding from a surface vein requires medical review.

05

Sudden One-Sided Changes

Promptly contact a medical professional for sudden swelling, pain, warmth, redness, or discoloration in one leg.

Vein Care You Can Trust

What Patients Say About Elite Vein Clinic

Real feedback can help patients understand the communication, comfort, and support they can expect.

My legs had really been hurting and burning so when I saw the advertisement on tv, I decided to give them a try. They got me in almost right away for the ultrasound and was told I needed 12 veins treated as they were not getting blood back to my heart as they should. They made 12 appointments within the next 6 weeks and I had my first treatment today. I have to say I was quite nervous but it wasn’t bad at all. The shots to numb it barely hurt at all and I just talked to one doctor, asking questions while the procedure was being done. I didn’t feel much at all. Everyone from front desk to doctors and nurses were super nice and caring. I am so glad I chose this clinic. I couldn’t ask for more and can’t wait for my legs to feel better!!
I was very anxious about having my veins treated, but the staff took an exceptional amount of time to answer my questions and to try to put me at ease. When it was time for my procedures, they explained everything as they went and told me what to expect. Jaime even asked me what kind of music I would like to listen to while they worked. It was a very clean and sterile environment. I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing vein treatments.
Elite Vein Clinic is the best vein clinic I have been to for treatment of all vein issues. I have been to other vein clinics and they were not as thorough or capable as Elite Vein Clinic. The entire staff at Elite Vein Clinic is great and I am very happy with my experience. Thank you very much!
I had my vein procedure done and everything went very smoothly. From the front desk to the procedure room, service was excellent. Friendly and professional service. Grateful to be a patient en at Elite vein clinic because my legs are feeling so much better.
From the moment I walked in the door of Elite Vein Clinic I felt like someone special. The staff were warm, friendly and professional. It was one of those very few stormy days so the staff pulled up the blinds so we could gather around to watch. The procedure was comfortable. When the Dr came in explained the problem in simple terms and then what would be done. She was excellent! I felt this whole experience should be rated a number 💯.
Awesome experience throughout my 8 appointments. 7 procedures and they were very punctual as well as friendly. It's been a long time since I've been to a Dr's appointment and didn't sit in the waiting room well past the appointment time. I have already recommended them to a friend on mine.
I had a fantastic experience getting my varicose veins treated through RFA! From the moment I walked in, the entire staff was incredibly warm, nice, and welcoming. Michelle and staff took the time to explain every single step of the procedure thoroughly, which completely put my mind at ease. The treatment itself went so smoothly, and the care I received was top-tier. I highly recommend this team to anyone considering vein treatment!
SELITE Vein Clinic treat her well. They’re really good there. They’re nice and pleasant and they take care of your pain in your legs or wherever you have vein problems. I would recommend seeing them if you have any pain. In her legs, arms, where those veins
I’ve had a wonderful experience with the entire team throughout my vein treatments. Everyone has been professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely kind, making me feel comfortable at every visit. They take the time to answer my questions and explain each step of the process, which I really appreciate. The front office is very welcoming and appointments run smoothly. I highly recommend them to anyone considering vein treatment!
This office is amazing. They gave me a last-minute appointment as a new patient. Front office helped me fill out. All forms Was helpful, very carefully explained all forms. The nurse practitioner took her time talked with me before they began any type of treatment. I would recommend this vein specialist to anybody and everybody that I knew and talk to thank you again.
I had some trepidation before visiting Elite Vein Clinic for an assesment. I was pleas a ntly surprised the process was thoroughly surprised with the friendly reception and knowledgeable personnel. Based on the findings during the assessment and discussion with the Elite Vein staff I decided to schedule four events (one per week). Having just completed the first treatment many of my concerns have been erased and I am confident that the remaining treatment session will go equally well. I have no reservations in recommending the Elite Vain Clinic.
They were just getting moved into a new facility so there were still boxes sitting around but everyone worked efficiently and everyone was very pleasant. The Dr. Was very honest about what he could and couldn't do. Unfortunately they couldn't help me but I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing anything involving veins.
Very friendly staff cool atmosphere great vibe with my girl up front. I’ll come back and leave another review at the end of my treatment not really big on reviews, but I will come back. The lady Dr I seen Stephanie made me feel more comfortable as I was very nervous, she explained everything in detail. Thank you so much.
I don’t have health insurance but I knew varicose veins run in the family so I decided to get a few veins looked at before they get worse. I’m glad I did. The Dr informed me that my veins aren’t draining optimally. The nurse was kind & gentle with the injections. Their cash rates for smaller veins are affordable & it’s worth getting your drainage checked out.
I haven’t had a chance to use the Clinic because Olga M took the time and compassionate care to recommend I have a different issue addressed first. She put me before the Clinic and as a result I found out I have something a lot more serious to be resolved first! Thank you Olga and Elite Vein Clinic
Everyone was so friendly and helpful. I didn't feel as though I was being rushed so they could get to next patient. Also I wanted to schedule with Phoenix location and they were helpful in getting my appointments made all at one time so I would not have a gap between treatments. Thanks you were wonderful!!!
After searching online, I found the right clinic to treat the pain in my legs. The staff is amazing. The Doctor performed the procedure excellent. Excelente equipo de trabajo. El Doctor tiene un gran conociento en el tratamiento de las venas. Respondio todos mis preguntas y el tratamiento no fue doloroso. Muy agradecida por la atencion y el tratamiento recibido en esta clinica.
The staff here is kind courteous and knowledgeable. And knowledgeable is what you want when you are trusting someone with a health care issue. Also there was no long unnecessary wait times. I appreciate when my time is respected. I recommend this team if you find yourself needing help in this area..
I had purchased a Groupon for Sclerotherapy. They did an ultrasound prior to the treatment and discussed future options to truly resolve the problem outside of the purchased treatment. I appreciated the thoroughness, kindness, and honesty of the entire staff. They provided me with the information needed to get my legs healthy again!

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Varicose Veins

Clear answers can help you understand the condition and decide what to ask during a consultation.

Are varicose veins only a cosmetic concern?

Some varicose veins cause no discomfort. Others may be associated with aching, heaviness, swelling, itching, cramping, skin changes, or ulcers. An evaluation can help determine whether underlying venous reflux may be present.

Can varicose veins cause leg pain or swelling?

Varicose veins may occur alongside aching, throbbing, heaviness, fatigue, and lower-leg swelling. These symptoms can also have other causes, so diagnosis should not be based on appearance alone.

What causes varicose veins?

They can develop when weakened vein walls or one-way valves allow blood to move backward and collect inside superficial veins, increasing pressure and causing the vein to enlarge.

How do doctors diagnose varicose veins?

Evaluation may include symptom and medical history review, a physical examination, and duplex ultrasound to assess blood flow, valve function, reflux, vein anatomy, and possible blood clots.

What is the difference between varicose veins and spider veins?

Spider veins are smaller, flatter, and web-like. Varicose veins are larger and may be raised, twisted, or bulging. Reticular veins are medium-sized blue or green veins beneath the skin.

Can lifestyle changes remove varicose veins?

Movement, elevation, weight management, and compression when recommended may help manage symptoms. They do not physically remove an enlarged vein. Treatment decisions depend on the cause and ultrasound findings.

Which treatments are available at Elite Vein Clinic?

Current treatment options include radiofrequency ablation, Varithena, and compounded sclerotherapy. The clinical team selects treatment based on symptoms, vein anatomy, and ultrasound findings.

Does insurance cover varicose vein treatment?

Coverage may be available when plan-specific medical necessity criteria are met. Treatment performed only for appearance may be considered cosmetic. Elite Vein Clinic offers insurance benefits verification.

How much does varicose vein treatment cost?

Patient cost can depend on insurance, deductible, coinsurance, vein findings, treatment type, number of sessions, and authorization requirements. The team can provide an estimate before treatment.

Is varicose vein treatment painful?

Comfort varies by procedure and patient. The team will explain what you may feel, how comfort is managed, and what temporary tenderness or bruising may occur afterward.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery depends on the treatment and your individual plan. You will receive personalized instructions about walking, activity, compression, follow-up, and when to call the clinic.

Can new varicose veins develop after treatment?

Treatment addresses selected unhealthy veins, but it cannot prevent every future vein from developing. Follow-up and ongoing vein-health guidance may help manage new concerns.
